Sisowath High School Faces Reforms and Dissatisfaction!!

Phnom Penh- Recently, a spur of events rose up at Preah Sisowath High School, one being the removal of the school’s principal, Mul Suyheng by the Ministry of Youth Education and Sport, and the other the commencement of NGS (New Generation School), a private school that has surfaced in the grounds of public schools.

Upon hearing the news, teachers and students stood up to the defense of the director, Mul Suyheng, requesting that he deserves to stay in position, however the move has been done. The reason of this dissatisfaction came because of the sudden removal of the principal and the Ministry stated that it was not a demotion but rather a promotion as he moves to work in an administrative position. Some students and teachers have claimed that the director has been poached by the NGS program.

On the other hand, the surfacing of New Generation School, an initiative reform of the education system done by MoEYS, is one of 15 programs to be implemented. 3 schools have been selected for this initiative, Angkor Chor Primary School (Kampong Cham), Samdech Primary School (Kampong Speu) and Preah Sisowath High School, the first to uphold this initiative.

Protesters including students and teachers have come out to say that they are unhappy with the surfacing of NGS.

In a statement made by the High School, it said “the establishment of NGS has taken out corruption and introduced high standards of teaching as some teachers have been charging students thousands of dollars per month in illegal fees for private classes”. However, most of the teacher’s salaries are rather not well deserved and need to work overtime elsewhere to earn more and usually charge students per subjects as they teach.

Protesters have come out to say that they are unhappy with the surfacing of NGS as they say there will be discrimination and that it is not right a private school would set place in the grounds of a public school.

According to latest reports, the ministry has announced that the position of Mr. Mul Suyheng as the school’s principal is still the same.
